Hey all,
Now, what exactly did Tan Kah Kee contribute to Singapore's society? Besides his seccessful buisness ventures, he brought education to a higher level, resulting in Singapore creating more talents for the workforce. By donating most of his fortune to schools, he allowed the younger generation to have more chances to study, something he strongly believed in.
Firstly, Mr Tan Kah Kee practically set aside all the money he earned to building schools. The money he donated help built many schools, such as Singapore ChineseHigh School, Tao Nan, Ai Tong and Chung Fook Girls' School. This really selfless act is very rarely seen. During the great depression, he even continued to finance the various schools he had supported despite the fact that his company was suffering from major losses. This shows his commitment to education and that he was willing to sacrifice a lot to give the younger generation a chance to study.
Secondly, he was also a social activists. He helped recruit some Chinese to assist the British during the World War II, and that increased the resistance Singapore could put up against the Japanese and so on.
So, in conclusion, Tan Kah Kee was a really selfless person who devoted his whole life to education and sacrificed a lot for his belief. It is because of him that more students could get a chance to study and improve themselves, and later go on to make contributions to Singapore too. Therefore, the students that study in the schools set up by Tan Kah Kee( such as me) , we would have to thank Tan Kah Kee for giving us the oppurtunity to study in a great school.
Jeremy signing off
